In the year 2001, in England, in a town called Windover, in the county of Hampshire, 24-year-old police constable Nolan Cormac was given the opportunity to take the step up from being a uniformed constable to a plainclothes detective constable.

The role of detective constable is a two- or three-year probationary role. If they wish, anyone negotiating the probationary period can then progress to detective sergeant, subject to proving their proficiency and passing the required exams.

Having achieved the standard required to become a detective sergeant in 2004, Cormac had been offered a position in the North of England but preferred to wait another year until a vacancy occurred here in his hometown. In April 2005, newly promoted to detective sergeant, his first assignment was to serve as temporary bagman to Detective Inspector “Sid” James.

However, past tensions had soured their relationship, and things had started off so badly for Cormac that he had jumped at the chance to cover a week of night shifts for a brief respite from James’s constant sniping…
